How Nature Impacts Our Wellbeing


Wellness is a topic that has garnered increasing interest globally in recent years. Our sense of wellness and well-being is directly affected by our daily choices and lifestyles, such as working and caring for our bodies. Due to this, it is vital that we pay attention to our daily routines and how we spend our time to ensure we are prioritizing our wellbeing. With warm weather right around the corner, there are plenty of natural and environmentally friendly ways to develop a more conscious and healthy routine.


The first, and probably most obvious, is to spend time with nature. According to Scientific Reports, being in nature and viewing scenes of wilderness can promote pleasant feelings and reduce negative emotions such as anger and stress. Exposure to nature also contributes directly to your physical wellbeing by lowering blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress-related hormones. Going for a walk or spending a day at the beach are great examples of ways to spend time with nature. However, sometimes there isn’t the time for such excursions. On our busier days, opening a window to let in fresh air or taking a 5-minute break to stand outside and absorb the sun's rays can still help us feel good.


Another way to implement a more conscious and healthy routine is to treat others (people and things!) as we would like to be treated. This traditional advice has scientific properties that benefit our wellness greatly. A bioethics study found that selfless acts may trigger the brain to release chemicals related to feeling good, which strongly affects our overall health and longevity. Actions such as donating items and dedicating time to volunteer services make us feel good while helping people and the environment. By helping others and the environment, we can also benefit our health.
