Joint Venture Brings Aquaculture Feed Mill to Africa

Updated: Mar 19

Feed Mill Breaks Ground in Kenya

Maxim Agri Holding, Victory Farms, and Gatsby Africa have joined forces and announced plans to build the SamakGro aqua feed mill in Kenya.

The feed mill facility is going to be managed by Netherlands-based Maxim Agri, and will produce economical, high-quality aquafeeds to meet the demand emerging from East Africa’s expanding aquaculture industry. Construction of the SamakGro mill is currently in progress in Naivasha, Kenya. The mill is expected to begin producing aquafeed sometime in 2023.

Maxim Agri Holding launched its Kenya operations in November 2017. The company has vast experience working in emerging markets due to its other operations in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The goal of the new mill in Kenya is to produce customized feed intended to aid small-land commercial farmers in maximizing performance.

Additionally, the mill plans to invest in local ingredient trials and development to test for a precise mix of nutritional elements from Kenya-produced ingredients. The venture aims to keep sustainability crucial by relying on sustainable sources of energy. The main facility will operate on a combination of solar and geothermal power.

Caesar Asiyo, the chief development officer for Victory Farms, is confident that the SamakGro feed mill will become a key component in alleviating the shortage of affordable aquafeed in the country. He hopes that it will allow Africa to become a major competitor within the aquaculture industry.

The joint effort will directly contribute to the manufacturing pillar of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda, and will create a multitude of employment opportunities. Once operations begin, the SamakGro mill will provide foundational support for food security across the nation.
