Health and Wellness in the World of Web3

Abstract technological background of a web

Creating Mindfulness in a Digital World

It's a big time for wellness! We're entering a new growth stage, and it's all thanks to Web3. From physical exercise to mindfulness and meditation apps, something is popping up for everyone, everywhere. TikTok and other platforms have made wellness practices a go-to for millions of people, and it looks like the market for mindfulness and meditation apps will only keep growing. The overall wellness market was estimated at $ 1.3 trillion in 2021, and increasingly, companies are shifting towards Web3-based solutions. According to a recent report, it's estimated that by 2028, the mindfulness and meditation app market alone will reach around $ 2.6 billion. Wellness activities are already popular, but now they're being taken to the next level, with Web3 startups leading.

Nataliya Grimberg is a Metaverse Strategist at a VR company called Somnium Space. The company recently started offering weekly meditation classes to help employees feel more grounded and connected and to help them focus more on their mental health. According to Grimber, a bigger focus on wellness in Web3 would create “a more positive and harmonious digital space,” adding that “it’s a great way to counter some of the not-so-healthy habits that can come with online gaming.”

While some may think that converting wellness to a digital landscape will increase the sluggishness typically associated with technology use and gaming, many companies are already proving otherwise. Sweatcoin, a move-to-earn cryptocurrency app founded in 2016, has already attracted over 110 million users in over 60 countries. The app motivates users to work out by converting daily steps into tokens that can be spent on products or donated to charity. According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Sweatcoin users increase their steps by 20% on average within 6-months of downloading the app. Similarly, sleep-to-earn programs are growing in popularity and incentivizing users to improve their sleeping habits.

While companies and Gen-Z users are enthusiastic about the movement, many other consumers are still unconvinced. It's confusing that mindfulness in a digital world could be possible when internet addiction is one of the leading causes of depression. However, these initiatives motivate people who would typically use their devices for far less productive means to make healthier life choices. More mainstream labels will need to move into the space for the movement to take off and become better understood.

Luckily, some have already begun. Over the last year, LA-based athleisure company Alo Yoga has integrated its preexisting community into Web3 through programs such as online meditation sessions on platforms like Roblox and The Sandbox. The brand has accumulated over 75 million visits to its Roblox-based ‘Alo Sanctuary,’ which lets users participate in guided meditation and yoga classes, amongst other options. The global non-profit organization The Global Wellness Institute also joins the Web3 community. The organization recently launched its initiative, seeking to combine the wellness economy with significant developments in the web through in-depth research into the virtual world, examining what decentralized technologies can provide to the wellness industry and how they can affect the overall wellness of internet users.

Users Have A Responsibility For Cultivating Healthy Relationships with Web3

To learn more about wellness in the world of Web3 and how users can build healthy relationships with these programs, go to JingDaily.com:

“Jackaline Tang, Gaming Partnerships Manager at Brand New Vision believes that netizens have a responsibility for cultivating a healthy relationship with Web3, and that building a supportive community is a mindfulness practice in itself. ‘Fundamentally it is up to the users {to take accountability for their own wellbeing in Web3}, but that’s also why communities are great. Not only can community managers and moderators help monitor behaviors and language, but they can also ban if necessary,’ Tang explains.

The rise in companies acknowledging the need for better health initiatives in Web3 is a promising step forward.

Grimberg is also optimistic that new advancements like artificial intelligence will help propel Web3, and positively impact the health of the community. ‘As software development keeps pushing boundaries, these experiences will become even more immersive,’ she says. ‘But it doesn’t stop there. Hardware evolution and, hopefully, democratization, mean wellness in the metaverse will become accessible to more people.’

Over time, wellness in Web3 will become less a niche, and more an indispensable part of our experience in the digital world.”
